The expressive and moving second movement depicts a struggle against oppression and ugliness. An ever growing chorale again and again bursts free from a harsh re-interpretation of the 1st movement's second theme. After a defiant and passionate climax, it is slowly and quietly defeated. A piece that is both modern sounding and accessible to audiences - think Beethoven meets Shostakovich.
